Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has emerged worldwide as a nosocomial pathogen of major importance, and the incidence of infections caused by MRSA continues to increase.
The recent emergence of community- acquired MRSA poses an additional challenge for microbiological laboratories to improve their screening strategies.
Significant increases were found for Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland, and the United Kingdom, whereas the proportion of MRSA decreased in Slovenia.
In all countries, variation between hospitals was observed. The variation between hospitals was highest in Germany and in most other countries with
an MRSA prevalence of 5% to 20%.
